Story
2024 marks our 20th anniversary of working with Edwin Martínez of Finca Vista Hermosa in Guatemala. This coffee Edwin named Centenario to reflect the timeless quality of the coffee, to celebrate his grandfathers 105th birthday and to recognize the legacy and history of our relationship.
Finca Vista Hermosa is the coffee that is most close to our hearts. Back in 2004 when we had just begun roasting at our previous coffee roasting company, we made a fortuitous connection with Edwin Martinez. We ended up buying our first coffee from him. And we were the first roaster he had sold his coffee too. A 20 year friendship started with a phone call and continues to this day.
We are incredibly excited to once again offer the impeccable coffees that the Martinez family always produces. This coffee is a special reserve lot selected from all the best day lots on their farm. You are going to love it.
Don Felipe Martinez's journey began in 1957 when he started cultivating coffee in the remote highlands of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, facing challenges like limited access to infrastructure and markets. Over the years, his grandson Edwin Martinez developed a vision to connect smallholder farmers in Guatemala with quality-focused coffee roasters worldwide, leading to the creation of Onyx Coffee. Finca Vista Hermosa, the family farm, nestled in the picturesque landscape of Huehuetenango, serves as a symbol of their commitment to sustainable and ecologically sound farming practices. The farm boasts various micro-lots with elevations ranging from 1400 to over 1900 meters above sea level, producing high-quality Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) coffees. Furthermore, the Martinez family actively engages in community development, offering agronomist visits and healthcare support to neighboring farmers and indigenous communities. Their legacy of three generations embodies a dedication to coffee and the well-being of the region.
