Story
This coffee boasts a rich, round body with a delightful combination of brown sugar sweetness, creamy almond butter, and a subtle fruit character from dried apricot. These flavors harmonize seamlessly, creating a well-rounded and approachable cup with a classic character.
Guatemala Pulcal is a top pick from Hacienda Carmona, a historic farm nestled in Guatemala’s renowned Antigua growing region. Owned by Maria Zelaya Aguirre, Hacienda Carmona has a rich history. Originally purchased in 1910 by Maria’s grandfather, Mr. Luis Pedro Aguirre, the farm has since expanded to an impressive 112 hectares. Temple Coffee established its partnership with the farm in 2024.
Hacienda Carmona is situated between 1,600 and 1,900 meters above sea level, where it cultivates Bourbon, Caturra, Villa Sarchi, and Catuai coffee varieties. The farm’s coffee cherries are meticulously hand-picked, pulped at their wet mill, and washed before drying at the farm itself. Today, Ricardo Zelaya and Luis Pedro Zelaya, the current owners, continue the family’s unwavering commitment to exceptional coffee production. Notably, the farm also raises Holstein cattle for the dairy industry.
During our recent visit, we witnessed coffee pickers diligently hand-sorting their daily harvest. They meticulously removed any cherries that deviated from the perfect uniform, deep-red ripe color. This meticulous attention to detail, though time-consuming and rare, exemplifies the farm’s extraordinary commitment to quality.
This meticulous attention to detail is the key to the deep sweetness that defines this exceptional Pulcal offering. Fans of our Guatemala Hunapu will find much to appreciate in this thoughtfully crafted coffee from Hacienda Carmona.
