Story
A delightful cup of coffee with enticing aromas of apricot, cane sugar, and nougat. As we savored the flavors, we detected notes of blood orange, rooibos tea, and caramel. The sweetness of candied hazelnut complements the acidity of apricot-like flavors. The coffee concludes with notes of dark chocolate, prune, and sandalwood.
Rung’eto Farmers’ Cooperative Society, located in Kirinyaga County, Central Province of Kenya, was established in 1997 to support the processing and marketing of specialty coffee from local communities. The society operates three factories: Kii, Karamikui, and Kiangoi.
Rung’eto boasts over 850 members, many of whom contribute cherry to the Kii Factory. Constructed in 1995 at the foot of Mt. Kenya, the Kii River, nearby, provides both the factory’s name and clean water for washing high-quality coffees.
The factory is predominantly supported by women farmers, each managing approximately 0.5 hectares of land. These farmers inter-crop coffee with avocados, macadamias, bananas, and other subsistence crops.
Agronomists at Kii conduct regular farm visits, offering guidance on optimal timing and application of treatments. In return, Kii receives exceptional cherries, and farmers are rewarded generously. Kii ranks among Kenya’s highest-paying cooperatives.
