Story

Triangle Accent

Unlike most Sumatra coffees, which are typically wet-hulled, this lot is a washed process coffee. It has all those unique fruit and spice flavors that we love about the Sumatra profile minus the tobacco and earth that are often present in wet-hulled offerings. Tasting notes include purple grape, craisin, graham cracker, pink grapefruit, and caramel. It’s clean, round, and syrupy.

This coffee comes from a small mill in the Pegasing district of Takengon, in Sumatra’s coffee-famous Aceh region. The mill serves several small coffee producers within the Pantan Musara villages. Several years ago, these producers were dislocated from their homes and land because of a natural disaster. They have since rebuilt their lives and farms with a new focus on coffee. In 2021, three separate coffee lots produced at the  mill won recognition in the Indonesian Cup of Excellence. These farmers were awarded 1st, 3rd, and 23rd place.

Coffee is delivered to the mill by producers in the area, and for washed coffees, only fresh red cherries can be purchased. The washed coffees are fermented for 36 hours after being depulped, then washed four times to remove the mucilage. It’s then spread into a drying house or on raised tables to dry for 14 days or so.

Story:

Unparalleled quality, a human story, and sustainability – that’s our coffee philosophy.

Unparalleled quality. We won’t buy a coffee unless we know that it will inspire you.

A human story. Often times a producer’s story gets lost in the coffee supply chain. It’s our focus to provide a seed-to-cup experience, honoring everyone involved

Sustainability. We purchase coffees directly from producers and through brokers who share our goal of making coffee a sustainable commodity. Financially and environmentally, the coffees we purchase seek balance. Premiums paid for quality far exceed fair trade premiums and afford a more sustainable, honest model.

Combine our coffee philosophy and passion for exceptional coffees with our down-home Midwest hospitality and that, in a nutshell, is JBC Coffee Roasters. We can’t wait to share our coffee passion with you.
