Nestled in the majestic mountains of Cerro El Tigre, near Santiago de Maria in southeastern El Salvador, lies the Las Mercedes family of farms. This esteemed estate, spanning over 125 years, has been passed down through five generations of the Ortiz family. Renowned for its exceptional coffee production, Finca Las Mercedes has earned a reputation as one of the elite coffee producers in El Salvador.
In 2006, Finca Las Mercedes achieved a remarkable milestone by securing First Place in the El Salvador Cup of Excellence. This triumph paved the way for a partnership that has endured for over a decade. Lucia de Ortiz, the farm’s marketing and relationships manager, played a pivotal role in initiating this collaboration with Jeff Taylor, the owner of PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. Since that initial call in 2006, the partnership has blossomed, allowing them to explore the diverse array of coffee varieties, processing techniques, and innovative approaches that Lucia and her team have to offer.
Beyond its remarkable coffee production, Finca Las Mercedes and the Ortiz family are committed to giving back to their community. They have constructed a local school, established a health clinic, provided food to a nursing home, and offered support to the local soccer team. The health clinic, in particular, has become an invaluable resource, serving over 13 communities that surround the farm. It holds a special place in the hearts of the neighbors and workers, cherished as a testament to the farm’s commitment to social responsibility.
