Story
In 2000, our friends Sergio and Isabel Ticas embarked on a journey in the mountainous region of Chalatenango, El Salvador, to produce Finca Los Planes. Despite coming from Chalatenango, where coffee production wasn’t traditionally expected, Sergio’s remarkable coffee soon caught the attention of the coffee world. Just six years later, he was awarded second place in the 2006 El Salvador Cup of Excellence competition, a testament to his exceptional talent. This achievement not only elevated the reputation of Finca Los Planes but also catapulted the “no-name” region of El Salvador into the spotlight of the coffee-growing world.
Following their remarkable second-place finish, we had the privilege of meeting Sergio and Isabel. Jeff and Sergio quickly formed a strong bond, leading to a direct trade relationship that spanned over a decade. During our first visit, we were deeply impressed by Sergio’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement. He had wisely invested the money from the Cup of Excellence competition to enhance the beneficio on the farm, ensuring better processing for future harvests. This demonstrated their unwavering dedication to excellence and their relentless pursuit of improvement.
From the moment we arrived, it was evident that Sergio and Isabel placed a strong emphasis on quality and sustainable practices. Over the past few years, they have been actively involved in various sustainability initiatives. One notable example is the installation of a new water recovery system, which not only safeguards their water supply but also purifies the water before releasing it back into the ecosystem.
During our first visit, Jeff Taylor, who had the opportunity to meet Sergio, expressed his admiration for the man’s passion for the land, the people he works with, and the coffee he produces.
