Story
Ephrem Sebatigita, a third-generation coffee producer, has dedicated his decades-long career to the coffee industry. Often affectionately referred to as the “Coffee Grandfather” by locals, Ephrem has made invaluable contributions to the Burundi coffee value chain. An electrical engineer by trade, he has built and managed multiple coffee dry mills, led the CQI efforts in the country, consulted with farmers, and produced some of the finest coffees that proudly represent Burundi and his expertise.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ephrem owns and operates Munkaze Washing Station and his family coffee farms in the renowned Kayanza Province. The coffee washing station, conveniently located just east of Kayanza Centre, provides excellent access for his cooperative partnerships to deliver coffee cherries. His multi-generation family coffee farm, perched on the hillside above the road, offers a glimpse into the farm’s rich history. In the 1930s, Ephrem’s grandfather planted some of the first coffee trees on this farm in Kayanza, establishing an origin story that has shaped much of Ephrem’s remarkable career. A few of those original trees still stand on the Rubagabaga farm today, serving as a testament to its historical significance.
Despite his accolades and expertise, Ephrem’s ultimate goal is to see Burundi specialty coffee thrive and empower others to succeed in the process. We are honored and proud to partner with Ephrem and share his exquisite coffees, which embody his heritage, showcase the exceptional Kayanza terroir, and reflect his visionary aspirations for Burundi.
