Story
Back for its eighth season, we’re thrilled to once again offer the consistently delectable Red Caturra from the father-son duo, Olgar Ortega Bolaños and Esnaider Ortega Gomez. Although we’ve previously featured this coffee under their family name, Esnaider requested a change this year to honor the hard work of his father, whose name has never been featured internationally on a retail bag before.
The Ortega-Gomez family’s coffee production history spans nearly six decades, beginning in the early days of coffee cultivation in San Agustín, Huila. Olgar’s father and grandfather initially planted coffee alongside their other subsistence crops, such as maize, in pursuit of a better life. The family land has been passed down through generations. Esnaider and his father, Don Olgar Ortega Bolaños, now own two separate farms in the area: La Esperanza and Villa Maria. This specific coffee originates from Finca Villa Maria, which also houses their small beneficio equipped with fermentation tanks and drying tables. During the harvest, Don Olgar dedicates most of his time to directly handling the fermentation and drying processes at this location.
The Red Caturra variety from Familia Ortega Gomez is exceptionally sweet and structured, offering a true representation of Colombian coffee from the Huila region. It boasts a balanced acidity reminiscent of red fruits like cherry or raspberry, complemented by a syrupy sweetness and a lingering aftertaste reminiscent of sugarcane and coca-cola. Our tasting notes include cherry, raspberry, red grape, apple juice, vanilla, nougat, sugarcane, caramel, coca-cola, sweet black tea, and baking spices.
