The region experiences bimodal rainfall and mild temperatures year-round which, combined with rich volcanic soil, creates an ideal coffee-growing environment. Over 1500 smallholder farmers bring their coffee cherries to Gachatha for processing, which includes pulping the cherries and fermenting them overnight before cleaning, soaking, and drying it on raised tables. In order to maintain a sustainable operation and minimize the impact on the surrounding communities, Gachatha Coffee Factory has put responsible farming practices in place. These practices include treating the water in soak pits so that no contaminants enter the local water supply, as well as protecting indigenous trees to ensure the safety of local bird life. Each year funds are set aside to finance schools, training, and emergency needs. The goal of Gachatha Coffee Factory is to increase production through farmer training on sustainable agricultural practices. This initiative is made possible due in part to the producers receiving some of the highest returns for their coffee. Gachatha Coffee Factory strongly believes in establishing a transparent, trust-based relationship with smallholder farmers, helping to support sustained industry growth throughout the country and continuing to elevate the standards of quality coffee produced in Kenya.
