Metropolis Coffee Company is a father and son owned coffee house and small batch roaster on Chicago's north side. We specialize in hand selected, craft roasted coffee, with an emphasis on sustainability and transparency. We roast coffee the way that it has been done for centuries: by artisans for connoisseurs.
Our coffee aesthetic is rooted in the belief that great coffee comes from a line of respect beginning with the farmers and their respect for their land. We, in turn, respect the farmers by paying fair prices for their harvest, and respect our customers by taking great care in the roasting and brewing our coffees. We want everyone in the world to enjoy great coffee - grandiose for sure, but like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill, we work hard every day to make sure that we are providing the great coffees, the stellar, personalized customer service that is central to enjoyment, the ground work to spread the word around the world about great coffee, and research to develop ever better technical standards.
The name Metropolis comes from Plato's notion of Polis, or city-state. A Polis is complete and sufficient unto itself. Community and the regard for differences among people and their ideas are central to our coffee philosophy. Each bean and is sourced with two groups of people in mind: the people that taste them, and the farmers that grow them. Coffee, like art, has an aesthetic.
Metropolis was born in 2003, and has become a beloved and award winning coffeehouse and roasteria. Our coffee is rooted in respect for the land where the beans are grown, for the farmers, for the artisan roasting process, for the craft of the barista, and for all the people who CAN and DO enjoy great coffee.
