1000faces emerged out of our belief that respect for geographic origin, direct relationships, and ecological awareness is the basis for creating a more sustainable and responsible coffee culture. Building on these principles from seed to cup, 1000faces has set out to bring forth coffees of unsurpassed integrity and quality. 1000faces is an adaptive business model that can work for multiple continents and communities through a culture of friendship, and an unwavering commitment to quality, justice, and equity.
The name 1000faces comes from Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero With A Thousand Faces. Campbell believed that “a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Like Campbell, we believe that there is more to life than commercial success or representational living. There is greatness to be had out there, and the only way we discover this greatness and become the hero is to follow one’s bliss. Our bliss is coffee. By bringing forth great coffees unto the coffee market we will be living the hero’s life.
The following principles are at the core of 1000faces Coffee.
Relationships: /1000faces considers its customers and farmers to be partners rather than consumers and producers. These dynamic and direct partnerships are essential to our mission and to creating truly great coffee.
Stewardship: Environmentally sound land stewardship is intrinsic to our mission, and must be a fundamental concern to all our farming partners. We believe there is a direct connection between how one stewards his or her land and the quality of the products that is born from it.
Equity: Every face in a thousand is equal and necessary in front of the cup. Furthermore, we believe that everyone involved in the 1000faces experience MUST benefit directly and equally.
Transparency: Business is intended to be an open-source democratic process where voice is valued and informed. By making our practices and strategies available to all, we hold ourselves to constant performance improvement.
