Rich and heavy bodied and smooth, this decadent coffee from Ermera, a district in East Timor, has deep, dark, rich notes of chocolate with a hint of toffee. The Timor Maubisse is the first coffee I ever tried from Atomic and I must confess, I have had a year long love affair with it ever since. Every 2 or 3 months, I find myself going back for more. The beauty of this coffee is that friends who only drink their coffee black are as enthusiastic about it, as I am. I personally love to add milk and sugar to maximize the heavy, gluttonous, rich and oh so naughty experience it delivers. A wonderful winter coffee for all.

The scorching Texas sun beat down on my head as I traveled through the back-country, yet nothing could dissuade me from my journey to Spicewood. Dust kicked up and covered my suit as I passed through the rusty old wrought iron gates that lead to Cuvee Coffee. I could see the roastery just ahead as I made my way down the rocky, dirt covered road. I needed to meet these dedicated and obsessed folk, who seemed to have come out of nowhere and are now considered a new force to watch in the coffee world. Standing atop a giant boulder, Mike McKim greeted me. He’s truly an Indiana Jones of the coffee world and spends much of his year traveling to origin in tiny prop planes. He toured me through the newly built roastery on the property, as his two children ran around outside playing Cowboys and Indians. The wonderful smell of roasting coffee filled the air. It was Cuvee’s newest offering… The San Jose Ocana Guatemala. A beautiful shade grown coffee from the Roberto Sanchez Lazo's family farm in the misty highlands of Chimaltimago. My hear was pounding, I could wait no longer. Mike finally poured a cup. I closed my eyes, savored and took in this wondrous medium roast with velvety notes of wild strawberry and sweet fruit. This confirmed and reminded me of why I came on this journey deep into Texas. I couldn't leave. I enjoyed cup after cup after cup. Get your fill while you can… whilst this offering is still available.

What better place than Ethiopia, the birthplace of Arabica coffee, to produce this lovely, amazingly sweet Italian style organic espresso from “coffee missionary” and famed co-founder of the Cup of Excellence, George Howell of Terroir, who is an absolute legend in the coffee world. Grown in the Sidamo region of the Dara district near Yirgacheffe at 1,700 to 2,100 meters above sea level in rich, fertile red clay soil, this creamy coffee is a departure from many of the light roasts Terroir is better known for. The wild coffee trees in Sidamo produce coffee fruit that has a perfume like no other with delicious notes of candy-lemon, soft apricot in a rich milk chocolate base. George, I think I love you! Another masterpiece from the Great One… Indeed!

The term "World Class" is thrown around quite a bit these days. Upon close examination, most of these claims are a bunch of hooey. It’s most often just a bunch of hot air. However, that is exactly the term that came to mind when describing Cuvee’s Meritage Espresso. It is in a class all by itself! Housed in a simple brown paper bag with a subtle logo, one would never suspect that the beans inside produce such an outstanding memorable long lasting sweetness. Meritage has hints of caramel, chocolate, nuts and berry and a heavy creamy body. This is a wonderful espresso with a cult following for a reason... It’s a secret discovery that should not be missed. The secret is out -- Fill your cup today!

As worldly as you are, you may be surprised to know that some of the best fresh roasted coffee in the country is coming out of a small quaint New England town in Middlesex county, a mere 21 miles outside of Boston. Established as an independent town in 1735, historic Acton has a history of men who have fought for change, going back to the days of Paul Revere, where the Minutemen of Acton responded to his call-to-action and fought in The Battle of Lexington and Concord. Like the men who came before him, George Howell of Terroir too is a revolutionary. George first became known when he opened The Coffee Connection in Boston in the 1970s. At the time, George described Boston coffee as “a desert of stale brown-painted wooden pellets and liquefied sawdust.” The Coffee Connection changed that. Years after selling the company, he has opened Terroir and is able to do what he loves the most, traveling across the globe to meet, work with and help farmers at origin. This coffee revolutionary has lead the charge in fighting against widespread victimization of the poor over-roasted burnt coffee bean, sadly found in many coffee shops across America. His focus is on single origin and single estate coffees, believing that a lighter roasting style approach allows you to experience the real intrinsic flavor of the bean… “Coffee that is designed to be sipped like fine wine.” The farmer should be celebrated and valued. Through this process farmers are able to charge prices based on the quality of beans they grow, not quantity. It financially rewards them for their work and has a positive long-lasting effect on their communities. It comes as no surprise why independent roasters think of George as a hero. He's mine! George lovingly dedicates himself to not only sourcing the primo beans but also finding the exact perfect roast to highlight and bring out each flavor note to its ultimate flavor explosion! His Calabria Style Espresso is no exception. Calabria is one of his darkest roasts, drenched with flavors of marzipan, cherry, caramel and deep bittersweet chocolate brownie. It is a Brazilian dessert in your espresso cup. Syrupy and dark, just a taste of its thick velvety crema and the revolutionary in you will raise your musket and pull a shot of this wonderful espresso.

The Panama Esmeralda is dazzling and is considered by many to be one of the best cups in the world! Verve has done it again with their delicate roasting of this stellar rare Geisha bean whose origins are believed to be from Ethiopia but was discovered in Panama. Hidden among other coffee vines, this treasure was only discovered a few years ago. Esmeralda, is a sexy and elusive coffee. I just want to immerse myself in it. It's sparkling and amazing, like swimming through a dream of sweetness and fruity, refreshing lime mist. I am blown away that even the wet coffee grinds smell of strawberry. She is nothing that I have ever encountered before. Esmeralda is one of the most expensive coffees ever sold at auction, yet is worth every penny, for every out of this world sip you have. Once you have this one, you will yearn for it every season. Order it while it lasts.
