Jeff Babcock of Zoka Coffee is no doubt one of the most respected names in coffee today. The fact that Zoka is Roast Magazine’s 2008 Roaster of the Year winner just adds more crema to their cup and yours! One of my favorite Zoka coffees is as bold and memorable as the man it is named for. Named after a historic figure in Washington State history, this dark roasted coffee with its wonderfully intense smoky notes of dark chocolate has made Colonel Fitzroy not just a popular coffee, but also one that has historically been cherished by Zoka customers since they opened their doors 13 years ago. This is a wonderful toasty pick for dark roast lovers. Colonel Fitzroy, we salute you! |

El Salvador is the smallest coffee producing country in Central America, yet it is no less important. While it is true that political instability has had an effect on supply in the past, things have changed. Once again, wonderful product is coming to market from farmers who lovingly grow and tend to their coffee trees like Luis Alonso Araujo. Through direct relationship, Mike Johnson has worked with Luis to produce an out of this world small lot, single varietal Pacamara for Johnson Brothers on his respected El Salvadorian farm, Los Alpes. Johnson Brothers Coffee proudly brings it to you, for your tasting pleasure. The combined efforts of Farmer and Roaster have produced a bright, dynamic cup that is both fruity and floral, and zippy with a sparkling touch of tangerine and sweet tart berry, that finishes with a subtle dark chocolate kiss to your palate. |

The scorching Texas sun beat down on my head as I traveled through the
backcountry, yet nothing could dissuade me from my journey to Spicewood.
Dust kicked up and covered my suit as I passed through the rusty old wrought
iron gates that lead to Cuvee Coffee. I could see the roastery just ahead as I
made my way down the rocky, dirt covered road. I needed to meet these
dedicated and obsessed folk, who seemed to have come out of nowhere and are
now considered a new force to watch in the coffee world. Standing atop a giant
boulder, Mike McKim greeted me. He’s truly an Indiana Jones of the coffee
world and spends much of his year traveling to origin in tiny prop planes. He
toured me through the newly built roastery on the property, as his two children
ran around outside playing Cowboys and Indians. The wonderful smell of
roasting coffee filled the air. It was Cuvee’s newest offering… The San Jose
Ocana Guatemala. Ah, this is a beautiful shade grown coffee from the Roberto
Sanchez Lazo's family farm in the misty highlands of Chimaltimago. As I could
wait no longer with my heart pounding, Mike finally poured a cup. I closed my
eyes, savored and took in this wondrous medium roast with velvety notes of wild
strawberry and sweet fruit. This confirmed and reminded me of why I came on
this journey deep into Texas. I couldn't leave. I enjoyed cup after cup after cup.
Get your fill while you can… whilst this offering is still available. |

Twins... On the surface they appear alike, but it is their subtle differences that
intrigue us the most. We study them, like characters from a movie, their every
expression and movement, forever searching for clues, waiting for a moment
when their differences will deceive them and give us a window into what lies
behind their shared facade. Good or evil? The uncertainty can be both terrifying
and thrilling like
Ritual's Evil Twin Espresso! It features a mix of two similarly grown coffee
beans, both grown in Brazil, but from two different farms; Fazenda Serra Negra
and Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima and grown by two different farmers.
When brought together the results are beyond thrilling with contrasting tropical
notes of Pineapple and Banana with Papaya and Berry, ending with a grand
finale of semi-sweet dark chocolate wickedness. This Brazilian coffee is Carnival
in a cup!

Colby and Ryan of Verve coffee in Santa Cruz are two of the coolest cats in
coffee. Last spring I decided to tag along with them on a trip to one of finest
coffee estates in Panama. Wilford Lamastus, the owner of Elida Estate cruised
up and we jumped in his jeep and headed into what would be a wonderful
Panamanian coffee adventure. While many coffees were enjoyed that day, The
Panama Elida Estate Natural won all of our hearts. This dry processed coffee of
the Catuai variety is heavy bodied and has a lovely sweet acidity. Wild fruity
notes of Strawberry, Coconut, Sweet Cream and Grape cha-chaed in my cup.
This coffee tastes great using a variety of methods and is a favorite of Verve
barista Chris, who loves it as an espresso or brewed in press pot.

I manned my hot air balloon across the Central American landscape landing on
Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom Caballeros’s compound long enough for
him to jump onboard. This time it was not the beauty of this country but the
sweet anticipation of trying a tiny experimental Honey Processed Micro-lot
Coffee that lead me here. Described as a Crazy Fruit Bomb of Honey and Maple
Syrup,
blended Bing Cherries, Blackberries and Apple, and rounded out with buttery
Caramel and Cocoa. This coffee is indeed life changing and fantastic. It's limited
in
supply and high in demand. Don’t put off tomorrow what you can brew today. |

Pawani by Novo is one of those very special coffees that lingers in my mind...
This coffee is so memorable, elegant and unexpected. I last drank it with a
beautiful Heiress. She's young, vivacious... You know who she is -- A favorite of
the
Paparazzi. She was in town for a party and popped by all perfumed up. She said
she could only stay an hour, yet stayed three. I knew what she was after... She
reclined on my sofa and I leaned in close and let her sample my exotic
Indonesian Pawani. She drank cup after cup. Conversation flowed in the most
uninhibited way. She spoke of her life, her travels and the various men in her
life, forever trying to make me jealous. I asked if it me or my Pawani that held
her in rapture? She did not answer, instead asking what the coffee notes were.
Keeping an air of mystery, I grinned and leaned in. She closed her eyes as I softly
whispered "Amaretto" in her ear. She gasped, and exhaled... "Yes! Of course.
Flavor notes of Amaretto." Smoothing her hair and regaining
composure, she reached for her handbag and slowly reapplied her lipstick, in the
way only she could. "That's a very sexy coffee, Professor. Hope you don't serve
it to all the girls." -Novo Pawani, a sexy coffee indeed. |

Rich and heavy bodied and smooth, this decadent coffee from Ermera, a district in East Timor, has deep, dark, rich notes of chocolate with a hint of toffee. The Timor Maubisse is the first coffee I ever tried from Atomic and I must confess, I have had a year long love affair with it ever since. Every 2 or 3 months, I find myself going back for more. The beauty of this coffee is that friends who only drink their coffee black are as enthusiastic about it, as I am. I personally love to add milk and sugar to maximize the heavy, gluttonous, rich and oh so naughty experience it delivers. A wonderful winter coffee for all. |

Falstaff Winter Blend is a robust offering this season from Metropolis out of Chicago. It warms me from the top of my kerchief to the tips of my slippers. Light a warm crackling fire and snuggle with your loved one as you relish in all that
this coffee puts into the cup. Rich and robust with lush maple notes and berries -- To all a grand season of joy, and to all a good cup -- Certainly this coffee
is one to celebrate one sip after another. |

Ask anyone, and you will find that they never forget their first. A memory from long ago that even today is never far from my mind. Her name was Belle Espresso, a friend brought her to my house one evening, knowing that we should meet. He was right. She had a medium body and looked just my type. With a come hither look, I picked her up and carried her to my coffee machine. I surrendered and closed my eyes. I could not resist her aroma… Brandy, Chocolate and Caramel and how lovely she looked glistening with oil. I had to have her. Steam excitedly shot from my machine wand as I pulled myself a shot! As I brought Belle to my lips, I wondered how many others knew her and if they felt the same about her, as I did... It was at that moment I knew that coffee was not just coffee, it was so much more and I would never forget her. That beautiful Belle is Klatch’s Belle Espresso and her memory will never fade away. |

Amazing coffee this week! PT's presents one of my favorites of all time, indeed. The farmer of this incredible bean, Ronald Monge Valverde is the third generation of coffee producers in his family. His grandfather, Adam Monge Castro started the farm 60 years ago. The Finca Cerro Paldo won first place in the 2007 Costa Rica Cup of Excellence. The brown sugar and honey notes are truly out of this world as the cup delivers sweet and soft nuances that leave one pouring another one right away. A winner all the way through the outstanding finish. |
