ere, but at the time he was the president of the Bank of America. During the first years after the purchase, Rudolph would visit the Hacienda every couple of months, however, in 1970 he became the director of Development for the United Nations, and his obligations abroad grew, leaving him less time to visit the farm. Many years earlier he had met and married Patricia Price. They had two children: Linnea and Price. In 1996 the Petersons came together to purchase another farm in the area, Esmeralda Jaramillo. It was on a section of this farm that they discovered the famous Esmeralda Special, Geisha trees. We first purchased coffee from Hacienda La Esmeralda in 2006. That was the first year the farm won the SCAP Best of Panama competition. Following the competition, they set a world record for the price paid for coffee at auction. That price has been shattered several times as they have garnered the reputation as one of the elite coffees in the world. THE STORY: Located in the municipality of Trujillo north of the city of Cali in western Colombia lies Finca Cerro Azul. Owned and operated by the Herrera brothers, Rigoberto and Luis, Cerro Azul grows the rare geisha varietal. The growing conditions and unique climate led the Herrera brothers to experiment with the variety in 2007. Cerro Azul is just one of the farms managed by the two brothers. The idea for growing geisha on Cerro Azul came from one of their other farms, La Carleida, located next to the world famous Hacienda La Esmeralda farm in the Boquete region of Panama. In 2007, they brought the geisha seeds from Panama and began their experiment. The growing conditions at Cerro Azul were perfect for the geisha varietal. The high elevation, ideal night temperatures, good moisture content and fertile soils contributed to the excellent growing conditions on the farm. The geisha grown on the farm features a similar profile to their genetic relative plants in Panama. A floral note common with the geisha varietal was immediately apparent in the cup, resembling a chamomile tea with hints of jasmine and lavender. Notes of juicy cherry blossoms and ripe mango make for a bright fruit forward profile with a sugar cane sweetness.
