tries were planting high yielding Catimor hybrids, Los Pirineos, and other farms in El Salvador, preserved their heirloom Bourbon stock. Named in honor of the Pyrenees, the mountain range that serves as a natural border between Spain and France, Finca Los Pirineos is the mountainous divide between the coffee towns of Santiago de María and Berlín. By some accounts, cultivation on the coffee farm started in 1890, but whatever the exact date, the farm has been owned by producer Gilberto Baraona’s family for over a century. Located in central El Salvador on the slopes of Tecapa Volcano, the farm maintains soil that is rich in phosphorus and potassium, greatly benefiting the coffee. Every year since 2008, including this year, Los Pirineos has placed in the annual El Salvador Cup of Excellence competition. Although this past crop year was low yielding, due to torrential October rains (a stunning 51 inches in just 7 days!) the coffee is tremendously sweet and delicious. In addition to this Bourbon, we will offer a special lot of Los Pirineos Pacamara variety coffee in autumn 2012.
