Papua New Guinea - Boroida
The coffee has strong tropical fruit notes with a floral and herbaceous finish. It is medium to heavy bodied with a well balanced mild acidity. The Baroida plantation sits at the head of the Lamari river valley at an altitude of about 1700 meters in the Mt. Jabarra range. The river runs through the plantation and the name “Baroida” originates with a legend that there is a spirit

that lives in one giant rock in the middle of the river. Even when there are enormous floods and most of the river rock and soil gets washed away, this particular rock and the spirit of “Baroida” remain. Coffee production is relatively new to New Guinea. It was during the 1960’s that the government encouraged coffee cultivation as a long term cash crop to help support local tribes and spur development in the area. The Baroida Plantation was started in the 1960’s by the Colbran family and is now in its third generation of family producers. While New Guinea shares its western border with Indonesia the cup profile is quite different. Most Papua New Guinea coffees are fully washed and tend to have clean and consistent cup quality. The grading system is based on screen or bean size with the A being a 17/18, X being 15/16, and Y being smaller than a 15. This particular coffee is an A/X meaning you will find beans that range in size from 15-18. This wide range in size translates to a dynamic range of flavor.
