I've had a long-time love affair with African coffees, so I was excited to try this offering from midwest roaster Johnson Brothers. My favorite preparation of this coffee was manual drip. The aroma on the pour is enticing: brown-sugar sweetness and spicy sourness with savory, almost meaty, undertones. Just off the brew the cup has these same qualities, but they fade away as the coffee cools slightly. Yet as is typical of Kenyan coffees, patience is rewarded -- as the coffee cools to room temperature it comes alive with flavor. Honey comes to the forefront as the understated complexity of unsweetened cocoa complements a bright acidity. Instead of floral notes I get something more herbaceous, almost like green tea or yerba mate. Sweet, crisp, and refreshing, this would make a superb chilled coffee in the summertime!
